In July, the cost of a basic food basket for a four-member household reached its highest level in Croatia, with Zadar County recording the most expensive price at 498 euros. This figure highlights the growing financial strain on households, particularly in rural areas where basic groceries have become increasingly unaffordable. The rising prices of staple goods such as vegetables, fruits, meat, and fish have been noted by residents across the region. According to local reports, many citizens feel the impact of inflation more acutely when purchasing these essentials. A resident from Zadar, named Katja, described the situation as challenging, noting that both vegetables and fruit have become prohibitively expensive. She added that meat and fish prices have also risen significantly, making it harder for families to manage their budgets. At the market stalls, vendors report a noticeable decline in customer traffic. One vendor, Ilonka, observed that while she usually has regular customers, there are now fewer people shopping. “Kupaca nema,” she said, explaining that only two individuals pass through her stall at a time. Another vendor, Rada, echoed similar concerns, stating that everything is too expensive, and this affects all shops in the area. Local economists suggest that the rapid economic growth in the region contributes to the current inflationary pressures. Dr. Jurica Bosna, head of the Economics Department at the University of Zadar, explained that when the economy grows faster than optimal rates, it can lead to increased inflation. “No one wants to have the most expensive basket of goods, but this does indicate that the region is developing strongly,” he said. He further noted that this is a known effect in economics, when growth exceeds desired levels, inflation becomes inevitable. The situation reflects broader trends affecting consumers nationwide. Many households are being forced to adjust their spending habits, prioritizing essential items over non-necessary purchases. Some older residents, like Zorica, expressed frustration over the rising costs, calling them “unnormal” for pensioners. “I don’t go to stores much anymore,” she said. “You buy where you can afford it, and that’s it.” Despite the challenges, some businesses continue to operate, though they face difficulties attracting customers. The combination of higher prices and reduced consumer spending has created a difficult environment for small traders and local markets. As the month progresses, it remains unclear whether these conditions will ease or worsen, but the immediate effects on everyday life are evident. For now, the basic food basket continues to grow in cost, leaving many families struggling to make ends meet.
