Kako so voditelji ustvarjali svojo podobo in utrjevali oblast

In July 1966, a remarkable spectacle unfolded in the public eye of the People’s Republic of China. At the age of 72, Chairman Mao Zedong swam 15 kilometers along the Yangtze River near Wuhan, completing the feat in just one hour and five minutes. The official press reported the event with awe, emphasizing Mao’s physical strength and vitality. This act was not merely a personal achievement but a calculated political maneuver designed to reinforce his authority during the early stages of the Cultural Revolution. The impact of this display was immediate. Mao had previously been questioned about his suitability for leadership due to his advancing years. By demonstrating his physical prowess, he effectively dismissed such doubts. The cult of personality around him was not based on genuine popularity, but rather on a carefully constructed system where the leader became the embodiment of the nation, revolution, and destiny. Within this framework, the leader was never truly exhausted, even as the state faced challenges. He remained unshaken despite policies leading to disaster, always appearing extraordinary with almost superhuman abilities. His words were revered and sacred, while his biography was mythologized. Many historical figures who have influenced modern times share similar traits. Mao’s decision to use swimming as a political tool began in 1956, when he swam in three rivers. Most of his advisors were skeptical of this choice, though they did not openly oppose it. His personal physician noted in memoirs that Mao’s decision to swim came unexpectedly, requiring him to wear swimming trunks, an unusual sight for someone of his stature. Other aides and security personnel wore simple trousers, while Mao’s body floated above the water, his large belly protruding like a round balloon, and his legs relaxed as if resting on a cushion. Despite the polluted waters, filled with human waste, the leader showed no signs of discomfort. As Mao took control of the country, he sought to project an image of active engagement rather than passive governance. After internal party struggles and doubts about his health, swimming became a symbol of vitality, courage, and connection with the people. Millions of Chinese citizens followed his example, organizing mass swimming events, which the propaganda apparatus used to fuel the Cultural Revolution, a decade-long movement that lasted until Mao’s death on September 9, 1976. This period was marked by violent class struggle, destruction of cultural landmarks, and the unprecedented elevation of Mao’s persona. A single photograph and a few lines in People’s Daily transformed the perception of an aging leader into an invincible hero. Even today, Mao’s swim is remembered as a defining moment, with some claiming he completed the distance twice as fast as Olympic champion Sun Yang, who set a world record of 1500 meters at the 2011 World Championships. While the powerful current of the Yangtze River played a role in his speed, the performance itself reinforced his grip on power. In late August of that year, Mao began organizing mass gatherings with millions of supporters at Tiananmen Square, and moved his official residence to Zhongnanhai, where he continued to swim in an indoor pool until his death.
