According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, Srinivasan had purchased land near Singapore with the goal of building a hub for this futuristic concept, but he was ultimately forced to abandon the site. Srinivasan’s vision centered around the idea of a decentralized state, modeled after a start-up, where members would live together in a shared space while operating under their own rules and financial systems. This included the creation of a cryptocurrency, a constitution encoded as a smart contract, and a national identity tied to the group. His book, The Network State, outlined these ideas in detail, arguing that traditional nation-states were outdated in an increasingly digital world. He believed that society should transition toward more fluid, network-based communities that could adapt quickly to technological change. To test this model, Srinivasan launched the “Network School” in 2024, a residential program located in a former hotel complex near Singapore. The initiative was marketed as a “Frontier Community for Techno-Optimists,” offering participants a chance to live in a communal setting while working on projects that aligned with the broader goals of the Network State. Members paid monthly fees ranging from $1,500 to $3,000, depending on whether they chose a shared room or private accommodation. The program attracted over 300 participants within its first two years, with plans to expand further. However, the project soon ran into trouble. Reports indicate that some residents expressed dissatisfaction with the living conditions, including moldy rooms and a lack of social diversity. More critically, local authorities in Malaysia raised concerns about the presence of Israeli citizens among the residents, citing religious sensitivities given the country's predominantly Muslim population. These issues led to increased scrutiny of the operation, and eventually, the Malaysian government ordered the closure of the facility. Srinivasan had previously described his project as a form of “tech Zionism,” drawing parallels between the founding of modern Israel and the establishment of a new kind of state based on innovation and collective effort. Despite these aspirations, the reality proved more complicated. The legal status of the Network School remained unclear, and the involvement of foreign nationals, particularly Israelis, created tensions with local regulations. As the situation escalated, Srinivasan was reportedly forced to vacate the premises. The exact terms of his departure remain undisclosed, though it appears that the project has been abandoned. Some of the participants have since moved on, either returning to their home countries or seeking alternative opportunities. Others continue to advocate for the Network State concept, believing that the failure was due to external pressures rather than flaws in the underlying idea. For now, the dream of a fully realized Network State remains unrealized. While Srinivasan continues to explore new avenues for his vision, the collapse of the Network School serves as a cautionary tale about the challenges of blending idealistic technology-driven governance with the complexities of real-world politics and law.
