Industrialisation has been identified as the central driver for economic transformation in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), according to regional leaders gathered at the 9th annual SADC Industrialisation Week. The event, held in Durban, South Africa, brings together policymakers, industry representatives, and stakeholders to discuss strategies aimed at boosting regional industrial development, trade, and job creation. The week-long forum commenced with speeches from high-ranking officials, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure, policy clarity, and collaboration between governments and private enterprises. The SADC Industrialisation Week serves as the region’s primary platform for advancing industrial progress, investment, and broader economic transformation. This year’s edition focuses on enhancing regional trade, increasing industrial capacity, and generating sustainable employment. Organized by the eThekwini Municipality, the event aligns with the long-term vision outlined in the SADC Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap 2015–2063. That strategy is structured around three core pillars: industrialisation, competitiveness, and regional integration. According to the organizers, the week aims to reinforce these principles while promoting innovation and digital transformation to empower women and young entrepreneurs. Durban, described by eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba as a strategic gateway to Africa, is hosting the event due to its significance in regional industrialization efforts. Xaba emphasized the city’s commitment to fostering investment and economic growth across the SADC region. He welcomed the gathering, noting that Durban’s role as a hub for trade and industry makes it an ideal location for such discussions. Elias Magosi, the SADC Executive Secretary, highlighted the importance of turning aspirations into tangible actions during the week. He noted that the forum allows participants to exchange ideas, build partnerships, and develop practical solutions to challenges facing industrial development. Magosi stressed that meaningful transformation requires more than rhetoric, it demands concrete steps and measurable results. Minister of Trade and Industry and Competition Parks Tau underscored the role of industrialisation in building economic resilience and diversifying national economies. He pointed out that SADC nations are already witnessing signs of industrial growth and expanded trade, but there is a pressing need to accelerate these trends. Tau argued that improving infrastructure, such as ports, roads, and rail networks, is essential for facilitating trade within the region. He warned that without robust transportation systems, the movement of goods between countries would remain constrained, limiting economic potential. In addition to infrastructure, Tau called attention to the reliance of some SADC countries on importing agricultural products from outside Africa. He suggested that the region could benefit significantly from increasing domestic agricultural production and improving farming efficiency. He emphasized the necessity of dialogue between government and business sectors to resolve policy barriers and ensure effective implementation of industrial initiatives. The outcomes of the week will be formally presented at the 6th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government, scheduled for August in Durban. The findings and recommendations generated here are expected to influence key policy decisions made by regional leaders. Khulekani Mathe, chairperson of the SADC Business Council and CEO of Business Unity South Africa, reiterated the need for clear policies and regulatory frameworks to encourage private sector investment. He stated that businesses require certainty to commit resources and expand operations within the region. The discussions throughout the week reflect a shared understanding among SADC members that industrialisation is not only vital for individual countries but also for the collective prosperity of the region. With a focus on strengthening regional ties, improving infrastructure, and fostering innovation, the SADC Industrialisation Week aims to lay the groundwork for sustained economic growth across southern Africa.
