Indonesia says 3 in 5 children fake age under new social media rules

Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, reported that 60% of children falsify their age to access social media, according to a government-referenced survey. This issue complicates the implementation of the new child protection regulations, known as PP TUNAS, which require digital platforms to verify users' ages. Patria stated that while some platforms have begun using algorithms to detect underage users and impose restrictions, age verification must still adhere to personal data protection laws. He emphasized the importance of parental involvement and suggested measures like companion accounts and parental monitoring tools. Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian nation with such regulations, and other countries like Australia and Malaysia are reportedly considering similar policies.
