Currently, the full minimum wage applies to adults aged 20 or older, with younger workers receiving reduced rates, ranging from 70% to 90% of the full rate. Although the Low Pay Commission had previously advocated for the elimination of these sub-minimum rates, the government rejected the suggestion due to resistance from small and medium-sized enterprises. The proposed increase brings the minimum wage closer to the living wage, which is generally defined as 60% of the median salary in Ireland. The living wage is expected to reach €15.40 by 2027, according to St Vincent de Paul. The gap between the minimum wage and the living wage has continued to shrink over recent years, with previous increases of 65 cents, 80 cents, and €1.40 in 2023. However, there remains debate over the long-term effects of these increases. The Economic and Social Research Institute has noted that past raises have sometimes led to reductions in the total hours worked by minimum-wage earners, though this finding has been challenged by trade unions who argue that higher wages can improve overall employment outcomes. The Department of Enterprise confirmed that the Low Pay Commission’s recommendations will be submitted to the minister on 21 July 2026. A spokesperson stated that the government will evaluate the proposals “in the context of prevailing economic conditions” and as part of broader budget discussions. While the recommendation reflects growing pressure for fairer pay, the final decision rests with the minister and the cabinet. Any adjustments to the minimum wage will be officially announced during Budget Day, with implementation beginning on 1 January 2027.
