An extensive fire broke out late yesterday evening at a Bartolini distribution center located in the Bovisa district of Milan. The blaze, which affected a large warehouse used for package sorting, some administrative offices, and several vehicles parked outside, was contained but has not yet been fully extinguished. Firefighters have worked continuously throughout the night and continue their efforts today as two containers still burning contain electric bicycles, raising concerns about potential explosions due to the batteries inside. A criminal investigation has been launched by the Milan prosecutor's office into the incident.

The fire took place on Via Don Giovanni Minzoni, where five firefighting teams are currently operating without interruption, alternating shifts to cool down the containers and prevent battery ignition. Authorities have issued precautionary measures advising residents near the site to keep windows closed, avoid stopping nearby, and refrain from playing or lingering outdoors, especially with children. Consumption of fruits and vegetables harvested in the vicinity is also discouraged. These recommendations were made following initial air quality assessments conducted by the Lombardy Environmental Protection Agency (Arpa). While current readings show no critical levels of pollutants, typical combustion byproducts remain present, though concentrations are deemed non-threatening. Arpa continues monitoring the situation and has installed high-volume sampling equipment near the city hall in Via Baldinucci, based on atmospheric contamination forecasts. The first filter will be collected in the early afternoon and sent to a laboratory in Milan for analysis of possible micro-pollutants such as dioxins, furans, and IPAs.

The fire originated in one of the containers and spread within the approximately 8,000 square meter facility. Firefighters initially feared that flames could reach nearby businesses, educational institutions, and fuel depots situated in the large goods movement area. A team leader noted that while significant containment efforts have been made, the operation might extend over the next one or two days. The presence of forklifts within the warehouse highlights the operational scale of the facility, although no trucks were found inside during the fire.

Authorities have emphasized that the current measures are precautionary, as preliminary air quality data does not suggest the need for additional actions beyond those already implemented. The assessment was confirmed by Milan’s Chief Civil Protection Officer, Marco Granelli, who stressed that these steps are prudent rather than alarmist. The incident has raised questions about its origins, with some officials considering the possibility of sabotage given recent similar incidents in Germany attributed to Russian-backed attacks.

The location of the depot is strategically positioned near a university campus, a railway line, and other commercial activities, underscoring the complexity of managing such a large-scale emergency. As the situation evolves, ongoing monitoring and public safety advisories will remain crucial in ensuring community well-being and preventing further complications.
