IMF zaključuje preglede v Egiptu in odklene 1,8 milijarde dolarjev

Mednarodni denarni sklad (MMF) je dokončal dve pregledi svojih finančnih zmogljivosti za Egipt, ki državi omogočajo dostop do približno 1,8 milijarde dolarjev financiranja. To vključuje 1,5 milijarde dolarjev v okviru 48-mesečnega programa posojil MMF in 272 milijonov dolarjev prek programa za odpornost in trajnost.

The International Monetary Fund announced on Thursday that it had completed its latest reviews of Egypt’s financial arrangements, enabling the country to access approximately $1.8 billion. This follows the completion of two reviews under the IMF’s extended credit facility, which allows Egypt to draw down funds as part of its broader economic stabilization efforts. The move comes after years of structural reforms aimed at stabilizing the nation’s finances amid persistent challenges such as inflation, currency fluctuations, and external pressures. Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly expressed satisfaction with the outcome, calling it a “renewed vote of confidence” in the country’s economic reform program. He highlighted the IMF’s endorsement of Egypt’s policy measures, which include adjustments to the exchange rate, reforms to energy pricing, and adherence to fiscal responsibility. These steps were crucial in maintaining macroeconomic stability during a period marked by regional volatility and global economic uncertainty. The latest disbursement marks the culmination of the seventh review under the IMF’s 48-month loan program. Following this, Egypt will be able to withdraw around $1.5 billion from the facility, which was initially approved as a $3 billion loan in 2022. In 2024, the agreement was expanded to $8 billion to address growing economic pressures, particularly the impact of high inflation and shortages of foreign currency. This increase reflected the need for additional support as the country navigated these complex economic conditions. In addition to the main facility, Egypt will also gain access to approximately $272 million through the Resilience and Sustainability Facility. This separate arrangement is designed to help the country manage risks associated with climate change and other long-term sustainability challenges. The combined funding underscores the IMF’s commitment to supporting Egypt’s economic resilience while addressing both immediate and future threats. The IMF noted that Egypt’s economy has shown remarkable strength in the face of spillover effects from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Entering the current period, the country was positioned more favorably than many of its neighbors, thanks to prior reforms and prudent fiscal management. However, the fund also pointed out that major vulnerabilities persist, particularly concerning public debt levels and the extensive involvement of the state in key sectors of the economy. These factors could pose long-term risks if not addressed effectively. The approval of the latest disbursements reflects the IMF’s continued engagement with Egypt’s economic strategy, even as it cautions against complacency. While the recent developments offer relief and support, they also highlight the ongoing need for sustained reform and careful oversight. As Egypt moves forward, the success of its economic policies will depend on how well it manages these existing challenges and leverages the new resources to drive sustainable growth.
