According to ICE, the officer attempted to conduct a vehicle stop as part of a targeted operation, but Araujo allegedly ignored commands and tried to evade arrest. The agency claims he attempted to ram his car into an agent, prompting the officer to open fire in self-defense. Araujo, who was reportedly en route to a construction job, died en route to the hospital.

Other notable incidents include the killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse, by a Border Patrol officer during a protest in Minneapolis. Federal authorities initially labeled Pretti as an armed agitator, but bystander video revealed he was unarmed and had been holding a cellphone.
