She had waited a decade to report the abuse she endured at age 14, believing her fight for justice had ended when her attacker, Simon Tyler, was jailed for nine years in November 2024. Tyler, from Kenilworth, was convicted of three counts of rape and one sexual assault after being accused of grooming Belgrove from the age of 12. He exploited his position of trust, acting like a “cool, older brother” to her, offering her alcohol and cigarettes before ultimately raping her twice, once in her family home while others slept and once during a family holiday. Belgrove concealed the abuse for 10 years before coming forward in 2022. Her courage led to Tyler’s conviction and sentencing, marking a long-awaited victory for her. However, the recent announcement of changes to the early release scheme has cast a shadow over her hard-won justice. The reforms, set to take effect in September, aim to reduce prison overcrowding by allowing certain offenders to serve less time before being released on licence. The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) stated that these measures are necessary to address a “prison crisis,” claiming the Labour government is “fixing” the situation by creating 14,000 new prison places and reforming sentencing practices to ensure dangerous criminals remain incarcerated. She has launched a petition, which has garnered over 85,000 signatures, urging ministers to exclude violent sexual offenders from the early release scheme.
