The suspects, identified as a man and a woman, are accused of marketing a laboratory reagent as a treatment capable of combating over 20 types of cancer. The arrests came during a coordinated raid involving the Department of Health and police forces, which targeted 13 locations associated with the company. According to Frank Chan Ling-fung, an assistant director of health responsible for drug-related issues, the operation uncovered evidence of illegal activities tied to the clinic's operations. The investigation revealed that the clinic had been under scrutiny prior to the raids. Media reports had previously exposed allegations of unlawful practices conducted by the clinic. During the recent operation, authorities confiscated more than 50 unregistered injections, primarily categorized as vitamin-based health products. These items were classified as Part I poisons under Hong Kong’s legal framework, indicating their potential danger to human health. The seized substances included a German laboratory chemical containing a protein known as WT1, which is used in legitimate cancer research. However, this particular chemical was not registered as a medicinal product in any country globally. WT1 is a well-known protein that plays a role in certain cancers, making it a subject of interest in scientific studies aimed at developing new treatments. Nevertheless, the chemical in question was intended solely for research purposes and not approved for medical use. Investigators found that patients were allegedly administered these injections, believing them to be a viable alternative to conventional cancer therapies. Chan emphasized that there were no reports of adverse effects or illnesses among individuals who had received the so-called "WT1 cancer vaccine." The clinic's alleged misconduct has raised concerns about regulatory oversight in the healthcare sector. Authorities noted that while some of the products resembled vitamins, they lacked proper registration and were sold without authorization. This situation highlights gaps in enforcement mechanisms designed to protect consumers from potentially harmful unregulated health products. The police and health officials are currently examining whether additional charges can be brought against the clinic's operators based on further findings.
