Health authorities tested water samples from six of the nine lakes in the popular tourist region, revealing the presence of the organism. The affected lakes are part of luxury residential complexes and shopping centers, designed for recreational activities such as waterskiing, kayaking, and stand-up paddling. This marks the first recorded death linked to Naegleria fowleri in Yucatán. The state is renowned for its beaches along the Gulf of Mexico, Mayan ruins, and cenotes, natural freshwater pools formed in limestone sinkholes. Authorities have decided to increase monitoring of water quality in these natural formations as well. The infected individual was a 34-year-old man who worked as a waterski instructor at one of the contaminated artificial lakes. He died from a brain infection caused by Naegleria fowleri. His case prompted health officials to conduct widespread testing of the area’s water bodies. Yucatán lies on the Yucatán Peninsula in southeastern Mexico and is a favored destination for international tourists. Popular attractions include the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá and the cenotes, which are natural freshwater reservoirs. However, the current safety measures apply specifically to artificial lakes in Mérida, with no general closure of natural swimming areas announced. Naegleria fowleri thrives in warm, stagnant freshwater environments, particularly in temperatures ranging from 35 to 46 degrees Celsius. Infections occur when contaminated water enters the nasal passages, leading to primary amoebic meningoencephalitis, a condition that typically results in coma and death. According to health officials, finding the amoeba in the environment does not indicate an outbreak or that individuals who visited the area are ill. Those potentially exposed are advised to seek medical attention promptly. Health authorities in Yucatán have launched an investigation into the companies responsible for maintaining and ensuring the water quality of the first contaminated lake. The parasite is primarily found in subtropical and tropical regions, according to Germany's Robert Koch Institute. Its spread is largely associated with warm water conditions, making it a concern for recreational water users in similar climates. Authorities have emphasized the need for continued vigilance regarding water safety, especially in areas where recreational activities take place in artificial lakes.
