The initial proposal to livestream the execution was revealed by Hegseth during an interview with far-right political activist Jack Posobiec. The Pentagon’s chief spokesman, Sean Parnell, confirmed that Hegseth and Trump discussed the decision to cancel the livestream before the president officially announced it. Parnell stated that the defense secretary fully supported the decision. Critics, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Vice President JD Vance, expressed concerns that the execution could become a rallying point for extremist movements. Retired U.S. military officers also issued an open letter opposing the plan, arguing that broadcasting the execution would tarnish the honor of the military and potentially elevate Hasan to the status of a martyr. Vance, when asked about the plan, admitted he would not watch the execution if it were livestreamed.
