Obnovljeno zanimanje za stabilne kovance sledi okrevanju cen kriptovalut v letu 2024 in zagovarjanju blockchain tehnologije v tradicionalnem financiranju bivšega ameriškega predsednika Donalda Trumpa.
Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citigroup and Deutsche Bank, among 21 financial institutions, have announced plans to establish a new entity to issue a dollar-pegged stablecoin in the first half of 2027. The announcement came on Tuesday, following initial discussions that began in October 2025 when the group included only 10 banks. This marks a significant step toward integrating blockchain technology into traditional finance, driven by renewed interest in cryptocurrencies after a price rebound in 2024 and former U.S. President Donald Trump’s advocacy for the sector. The newly formed group intends to expand beyond the dollar, aiming to develop stablecoins tied to other G7 currencies, with the euro being a top priority. Stablecoins, which function as digital representations of fiat currency, are primarily used in crypto trading but have gained traction as tools for cross-border payments. Their potential to streamline global transactions has attracted attention from major financial players seeking to harness blockchain’s efficiency while maintaining regulatory compliance. This initiative comes amid competition from another consortium comprising 37 financial institutions, which established a company named Qivalis. That group has already expressed intentions to launch a euro-pegged stablecoin later this year. Notably, some institutions, such as Spanish bank BBVA, are part of both consortia, highlighting overlapping interests and strategic collaboration within the industry. Additionally, Trump’s family-owned crypto firm, World Liberty Financial, has independently issued its own stablecoin, further illustrating the growing diversity of actors in the space. Despite these developments, the market for bank-issued stablecoins remains underwhelming. The dominant player in the sector is Tether, based in El Salvador, which claims to have issued over $180 billion worth of its dollar-pegged token. Tether generates substantial revenue by investing its reserves in assets such as U.S. Treasury securities. Its success underscores the challenges faced by newer entrants, who struggle to gain widespread adoption despite technological advancements. In Europe, France’s Société Générale became the first major bank to issue a dollar-backed stablecoin via its digital asset subsidiary. However, the token has not achieved broad usage, with only $12.5 million circulating, according to the bank’s official data. This limited uptake reflects broader concerns about the practicality and security of stablecoins, particularly in light of regulatory scrutiny. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde has raised alarms about the risks associated with privately issued stablecoins. She has warned that such tokens could undermine central banks' control over monetary policy and threaten financial stability. These warnings highlight the delicate balance between innovation and regulation in the evolving landscape of digital finance. Looking ahead, the proposed stablecoin initiatives by Goldman Sachs and its partners represent a coordinated effort to address the limitations of existing solutions and capitalize on emerging opportunities. While the path forward is uncertain, the involvement of major financial institutions signals a growing recognition of blockchain’s potential to reshape global finance. As the project moves toward implementation, continued dialogue with regulators and public trust will remain critical factors in determining its long-term viability.
