Odkritje poudarja kulturni in verski pomen verovanj v zvezi z zdravjem v rimskem Aspendosu, ki ponuja vpogled v javne rituale in družbene vrednote. Skupina kipov je bila najdena v bližini spomenikovskih vrat, povezanih z vzhodnim spomenikom, kar kaže, da je imela pomembno javno funkcijo.

A 1,800-year-old marble statue of Asklepios, the ancient Greek god of healing, alongside his son and assistant Telesphoros, has been unearthed at the archaeological site of Aspendos in Antalya, southern Turkey. The discovery was made during excavations conducted under the Culture and Tourism Ministry’s “Heritage for the Future” initiative. The statue group, measuring 2.2 meters tall, was found within the ruins of the northern wing of a Monumental Gate on the western side of the East Square along Theater Street. The artifact is dated to the last quarter of the second century AD and showcases the sculptural techniques typical of the Roman Imperial era. It features Asklepios, depicted as a mature, bearded man with long, thick hair, standing upright with his weight resting on his left leg. His right leg is slightly bent and extended forward. His upper body is largely exposed, while his himation, a traditional Greek cloak, is draped over his left shoulder, forming dense folds around his waist and legs. In front of Asklepios' left foot stands Telesphoros, a smaller figure clad in a long, hooded garment that covers most of his body, giving him a column-like form. This figure symbolizes the completion of treatment, recovery, and convalescence. The location of the discovery, near the Monumental Gate connected to the East Square, suggests that the statue group was placed in a public and ceremonial space within Aspendos. This positioning underscores the significance of the healing deity in the city’s religious and social life during the Roman period. The find offers new insights into the health cults, belief systems, and societal practices of the time. The excavation took place in the context of broader efforts to uncover and preserve historical artifacts in Aspendos, an ancient Greco-Roman city known for its well-preserved structures such as a theater and aqueduct. The statue group adds to the growing collection of relics that illustrate the cultural and spiritual landscape of the region during the Roman era. In addition to the Asklepios statue, archaeologists recently uncovered another significant find at Aspendos: a tomb believed to belong to a wrestler. This tomb, estimated to be around 2,400 years old, was discovered shortly after the statue group. The two discoveries highlight the diverse aspects of life in Aspendos, ranging from religious practices to athletic culture. These findings provide a more comprehensive understanding of the city’s history and its inhabitants. The Culture and Tourism Minister, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, emphasized the importance of these discoveries in shedding light on the past. He noted that the Asklepios statue group, in particular, reflects the artistic style of the period through the figures’ poses and the detailed depiction of their clothing and facial features. The statue group is considered a crucial piece of evidence for studying the presence of the Asklepios cult in Roman-era Aspendos and the influence of health-related beliefs in daily life. Further analysis and research will be conducted to fully understand the historical and cultural significance of both the statue group and the wrestler’s tomb. These artifacts will likely be preserved and displayed in local museums, contributing to the ongoing narrative of Aspendos as a key center of ancient civilization.
