GLP-1 so povezani s 17% zmanjšanjem bolniških dopustov delavcev, ugotavlja nova študija

GLP-1 drugs, commonly used to treat diabetes and obesity, are associated with a 17% decrease in long-term worker sick leave, according to a new study released this month. Researchers analyzing Danish workforce and medication data found that individuals using these medications took significantly fewer extended absences due to illness compared to those who did not. Long-term sick leave was defined as absences exceeding 30 days, a threshold relevant given Denmark’s unique approach to sick leave coverage. The study, published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, highlights how improved health outcomes from GLP-1 therapy may translate into tangible economic benefits. These drugs, available under brand names such as Ozempic and Wegovy, are known to lower the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes. Such improvements in health, researchers suggest, likely contribute to reduced instances of prolonged absence from work. Jonathan Zhang, a co-author of the study and professor at Duke University, noted that the potential savings from reduced long-term sick leave could benefit both employers and the government. In Denmark, employers cover full wages for absences up to 30 days, while the state assumes responsibility for longer-term sickness. As a result, the financial impact of decreased absenteeism varies depending on the duration of the leave. According to the study, the average savings per worker amounted to approximately $866 annually, equivalent to 1.5% of an individual’s salary. This figure reflects the combined effect of reduced absenteeism and the associated costs avoided by employers and public institutions. However, Zhang emphasized that these savings primarily accrue to the government rather than directly benefiting the individual worker, given the generous sick leave benefits in Denmark. Zhang pointed out that while the study focused on Denmark, its implications might extend to other countries, including the United States. He explained that in the U.S., where sick leave policies are less generous, employees often continue working despite feeling unwell. This leads to diminished productivity and does not provide either the worker or the employer with clear advantages. “People get sick and they go to work,” he said, “but they’re less productive because they feel crappy.” The concept of “presenteeism”, where employees attend work but perform below their usual capacity due to health issues, was highlighted as a key area where GLP-1 drugs could make a difference. If these medications help workers maintain better health and energy levels, companies could see increased efficiency and output. Employees, in turn, might experience greater job satisfaction and opportunities for advancement. The study underscores the broader economic value of managing chronic conditions through targeted medical interventions. While the immediate focus is on reducing absenteeism, the long-term effects on workplace productivity and overall economic performance could be substantial. As interest in weight management and metabolic health continues to grow, the role of GLP-1 drugs in shaping both individual well-being and organizational success becomes increasingly relevant.
