Air New Zealand flight NZ166 lifted off from Western Sydney International Airport shortly after 9:00 am on Monday, October 26, marking the first international commercial departure from the facility. The aircraft headed toward Auckland, New Zealand, following the landing of inbound flight NZ165 at 7:27 am, which arrived 18 minutes ahead of schedule. This sequence of arrivals and departures inaugurated regular international service at Sydney’s second major airport, ending a period of limited operations that included only domestic and freight traffic. The launch represents the culmination of more than four decades of planning for a new aviation hub in the fast-growing western suburbs of Sydney. The single-runway facility is described as Australia’s first new major aviation hub in over five decades. While the airport began handling freight operations in July and commenced domestic flights on Sunday, October 25, the Monday departures signal the start of its full international role. The new site provides the first substantial alternative to Kingsford Smith Airport, which has operated for over a century and serves as the country’s busiest terminal. Kingsford Smith Airport, located in Botany Bay approximately nine kilometers from the city center, handles more than 42 million passengers annually across its three runways. However, its proximity to residential areas means aircraft noise affects many homes, and strict curfews prohibit passenger aircraft from operating during nighttime hours. In contrast, Western Sydney International operates without such curfews, allowing for 24-hour activity. Airport Chief Executive Simon Hickey stated that these round-the-clock operations provide airlines with greater flexibility to connect to global hubs and offer travelers more choices regarding how they reach international destinations. Air New Zealand initiated the service with three weekly flights between Auckland and Western Sydney. Kate Boyer, the airline’s chief operations officer, noted that the region supports a large Kiwi population and expatriate community, creating strong personal and familial ties. She highlighted existing business, trade, and cargo links as key drivers for the route. Boyer emphasized that the airline possesses one of the strongest Pacific destination networks globally, facilitating connections to various Pacific islands. She expressed confidence that the new gateway would help reconnect individuals with families in New Zealand and the broader Pacific region. Among the early passengers were Matt and Serena Ross, who traveled on the inaugural outbound flight. The couple acknowledged the significance of being part of a milestone event, particularly for New Zealanders visiting Australia. Matt Ross remarked on the novelty of the new infrastructure but admitted the switch caused initial confusion. He and his partner had assumed their tickets, purchased for travel from Sydney, referred to the established Kingsford Smith Airport at Mascot. After taking a lengthy ride via ride-share service to the new location, Ross joked that checking their ticket details was fortunate. Beyond Air New Zealand, several other carriers are scheduled to begin operations at the new airport. Singapore Airlines is set to start services in November. Following them, Vietjet Air is expected to commence flights in January 2027, Fiji Airways in March 2027, and Qatar Airways in December 2027. Currently, Qantas’ budget subsidiary Jetstar serves as the primary domestic operator, offering routes to the Gold Coast, Melbourne, and Brisbane. The first domestic flight, bound for the Gold Coast, occurred on Sunday prior to the international launch. Federal government officials view the curfew-free status of the new airport as a strategic advantage. Coordinating connections for long-haul flights to distant hubs in Asia or the Middle East is often complicated by the operational limits imposed at Sydney’s main airport. The ability to operate continuously is anticipated to attract additional international carriers and facilitate increased business and tourism flows. For local businesses, the new connection offers direct access to New Zealand markets for the first time. Renos Rologas, the ANZ General Manager of FCM Travel within the Flight Centre Travel Group, indicated that corporate bookings for trans-Tasman travel are growing. Data from Flight Centre shows an 8.4 percent year-on-year increase in corporate reservations. Capacity on the Australia-New Zealand route is also expanding, with seat availability projected to rise by seven to eight percent in the final quarter of the year. Rologas attributed recent booking growth to sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and healthcare, noting active cross-border projects in these fields. Lucy Hall, Air New Zealand’s general manager of short-haul operations, described the new airport as a convenient gateway for western Sydney residents. The facility was constructed at a cost of AUD 5.3 billion, equivalent to USD 3.7 billion, excluding associated transport infrastructure. Although accessible by road, the airport does not currently have a direct rail connection. A direct rail link is not expected to become available until at least December 2027. The new hub serves a population exceeding 2.5 million people in the western region, aiming to diversify Sydney’s air travel options beyond the congested central airport.

Preiskovani potniki so opozorili, da je priročno imeti drugo možnost letališča, čeprav so nekateri sprva izrazili zmedo glede tega, na katero letališče v Sydneyju se nanašajo njihove vozovnice. Izvršni direktorji Air New Zealand so poudarili močne demografske in gospodarske vezi med zahodnim Sydneyjem in Novo Zelandijo, vključno z znatnimi skupnostmi izseljencev in trgovinskimi povezavami. Zvezna vlada meni, da je odsotnost policijske ure na letališču strateška prednost za privabljanje mednarodnih prevoznikov na dolge razdalje in povečanje globalne povezljivosti.
