The Izumrud is described as a 62-meter-long patrol ship equipped with a helicopter landing platform. According to the Washington Post, it operates under the FSB, Russia’s primary intelligence agency. Ukrainian officials claim the attack resulted in casualties among the crew, though these claims have not been independently verified. Russian authorities have not officially confirmed the loss of the ship, despite growing evidence pointing to its destruction. The attack has drawn particular attention due to the historical context surrounding the Izumrud. Reports suggest the vessel was involved in a 2018 incident in the Kerch Strait, where Russian forces opened fire on Ukrainian ships attempting to transit through the strait into the Azov Sea. The luxurious estate, which gained international attention after opposition figure Alexei Navalny detailed its existence in a video several years ago, sits just a few kilometers south-east of Gelendschik along the coast. In addition to this incident, Ukrainian drone forces continue their campaign against Russian shipping in the Black Sea. According to Robert Browdi, head of Ukraine’s drone units, recent attacks targeted 20 vessels, including 17 oil tankers, two gas carriers, and a tugboat.
