The players of She Plays to Win, the nonprofit organization behind the Lionesses, refuse to replace one of their top players with a man. They argue such a change would undermine team cohesion and discourage other women from participating in chess. Lorin D’Costa, founder of She Plays to Win, expressed disappointment over the situation. “The ‘Lionesses’ have fought hard to reach this level, yet now they must sacrifice what makes them unique,” she said. The team believes the current rule forces them into a compromise that contradicts their mission of promoting women-only teams in chess. Mike Truran, representing the 4NCL, defended the regulation. He stated that since the league’s founding in 1994, the top division has always required mixed-gender teams. According to Truran, the policy aims to encourage broader participation and ensure a balanced representation of genders within competitive play. Despite these efforts, women remain significantly underrepresented in chess. Official statistics from the World Chess Federation (FIDE) show that women account for just 11 percent of players on the official world rankings. This disparity highlights ongoing challenges in achieving gender equality within the sport.
