The Federal Government has called on stakeholders in Nigeria's extractive industries to leverage the upcoming 2026 Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) validation exercise as a pivotal opportunity to enhance transparency, accountability and governance within the sector. The validation, set to begin on July 1, marks a crucial step in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to meet international standards for resource governance. This push comes amid renewed commitments under President Bola Tinubu’s administration to modernize the nation’s approach to managing its oil, gas and mineral wealth. Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and chairman of the National Stakeholders’ Working Group, opened a three-day joint strategic retreat in Abuja on Monday. The retreat brought together members of the National Stakeholders’ Working Group and senior officials from the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI). The session, themed “Strengthening EITI Implementation: From Extractive Sector Reporting to Impact,” aims to align all parties toward achieving the goals of the validation exercise. According to a statement released by the Office of the SGF, Akume emphasized that the validation should not merely serve as a compliance check but rather act as a catalyst for deeper institutional reforms. The validation process, scheduled for the month of August, will involve an international team assessing Nigeria’s adherence to EITI standards. These include requirements such as systematic disclosure of financial flows, beneficial ownership transparency, contract transparency, and robust anti-corruption mechanisms. The 2023 EITI Standard has placed increased focus on these areas, reflecting evolving global expectations for transparency in extractive industries. Akume highlighted that these priorities align with the Renewed Hope Agenda, the current administration’s reform blueprint, underscoring the government’s resolve to implement necessary changes. Akume reiterated that the success of EITI implementation must be judged not by the quantity of reports generated but by the tangible impact of transparency on governance and development. He pointed to the need for improved public trust in resource management, enhanced investor confidence, and sustainable national growth. The SGF also praised NEITI for its progress in preparing for the validation, including the submission of required documentation and engagement with key stakeholders. This effort reflects a broader commitment to ensuring that Nigeria meets international benchmarks in transparency. NEITI Executive Secretary, Hon. Musa Adar, echoed these sentiments during the retreat. He acknowledged that while NEITI has built a strong reputation over the years for publishing independent reports on the oil, gas and mining sectors, the EITI process has evolved beyond mere reporting to emphasize measurable impact. Adar noted that the validation will offer Nigeria a chance to showcase both compliance with EITI standards and the effectiveness of reforms already underway. However, he also admitted that challenges remain, particularly in coordination, documentation and the implementation of recommendations. Adar called for stronger collaboration between the National Stakeholders’ Working Group and NEITI management, urging participants to develop actionable strategies for accelerating audit recommendations, improving data accessibility and ensuring that transparency leads to better governance and resource management. The retreat, he said, serves as a critical platform for aligning priorities and reinforcing collective responsibility in achieving the desired outcomes of the validation exercise. As Nigeria prepares to welcome the EITI International Validation Assessors in August, the focus remains on demonstrating not just compliance, but real progress in transforming the extractive sector into one that is more transparent, accountable and beneficial to the public.
