Despite these recommendations, the challenge remains formidable. Even with optimal adaptation, the rising frequency and intensity of fire-prone weather conditions linked to climate change will continue to strain firefighting capacities. Recent data indicate that the fire weather index has risen less dramatically in parts of Greece and southern Italy due to slightly wetter summers. However, regions like the Iberian Peninsula and parts of France have seen more pronounced increases, underscoring the uneven impact of climate shifts. Weather patterns, including phenomena such as La Niña and El Niño, play a crucial role in shaping fire risk. Additionally, atmospheric circulation patterns, such as the North Atlantic Oscillation, influence local weather conditions. As global warming alters these patterns, the unpredictability of weather-related fire risks is likely to grow. Scientists emphasize that while localized improvements may offer temporary relief, long-term solutions require systemic changes in how forests and landscapes are managed.
