While 29 railcars and one locomotive were affected, no injuries were reported, and most of the spilled iron ore did not reach the frozen surface of the nearby Nipissis River. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada stated it could not definitively identify the exact cause of the derailment. However, it suggested that a broken rail likely contributed to the incident. The board noted that the rail failure may have been influenced by the stress caused by sharp temperature changes and the prior passage of another train with a defective wheel.
