Afghanistan’s poet Fazal Rahim Farahi has published his first poetry collection in Trieste, marking a new chapter in his literary journey. The book, titled Ombra e attesa del sole (Shade and the Waiting Sun) in Italian, was released by the publishing house Infinito edizioni. Although Farahi does not yet feel fully comfortable with the Italian language, necessary for translating his poems, he worked closely with local poet Marco Veznaver to ensure the work reached its intended audience. The release took place in front of a gathering at the San Marco café, highlighting the growing cultural exchange between Afghanistan and Italy. The collaboration between Farahi and Veznaver began three years ago during their meeting at the youth center Toti. Veznaver recalled how Farahi expressed his desire to publish a poetry collection and immediately offered his support, sensing the poet’s deep longing to build bridges through art. “Fazal’s collection is a bridge he has built with great talent,” Veznaver remarked, emphasizing the emotional and artistic significance of the project. The process of translation was meticulous, with Farahi writing all the poems in Pashto, his native tongue, before entrusting Veznaver with the task of rendering them into Italian. Farahi’s decision to publish in Trieste reflects both personal and political motivations. As an Afghan poet navigating the complexities of displacement and migration, he sees literature as a means of preserving identity and fostering connection. His words resonate deeply with those who have experienced the upheaval of war and the search for belonging. The title of his collection, Ombra e attesa del sole, captures this sentiment, a shade waiting for the sun, symbolizing hope amid uncertainty. This metaphor aligns with Farahi’s belief that true change cannot be achieved through conflict alone, a philosophy he has long advocated. The publication of Ombra e attesa del sole comes at a time when cultural dialogue between Afghanistan and Europe is gaining momentum. Trieste, known for its historical role as a crossroads between East and West, serves as an ideal setting for such exchanges. The city’s diverse population and rich literary tradition provide a fertile ground for artists like Farahi to share their voices. His presence in Trieste underscores the broader movement of Afghan intellectuals seeking refuge and recognition abroad while maintaining ties to their homeland. Farahi’s work challenges the notion that war is the only path to transformation. He argues that meaningful change requires patience, creativity, and solidarity. These ideas are woven throughout his poetry, which often explores themes of loss, resilience, and the enduring human spirit. By choosing to publish in Italy, Farahi is not only reaching a wider audience but also asserting the value of cultural diversity and mutual understanding. His message resonates with readers who have witnessed the consequences of violence and the power of storytelling to heal. As the collection gains attention, expectations are high for its impact on both literary and social levels. Critics and fellow poets have praised the work for its lyrical beauty and emotional depth. Meanwhile, Farahi continues to engage with audiences through readings and discussions, reinforcing his commitment to using poetry as a tool for connection. With the support of local collaborators like Veznaver, he is proving that even in times of displacement, creative expression can thrive and inspire.
