The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has introduced its 2025 Bye-Laws, representing the first major revision of its regulatory framework in over two decades. The updated regulations were formally presented during a ceremony held at the headquarters of the agency in Abuja. The event was attended by key officials, including the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Umar Ganduje, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive, Olubunmi Kuku. The 2025 Bye-Laws replace the previous version, which had remained unchanged since 2005. According to Ms Kuku, the old rules had become increasingly obsolete, failing to address the complexities of today's aviation landscape. She emphasized that the new bye-laws have been crafted to align with contemporary standards and operational requirements within the Nigerian aviation sector. This update aims to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of airport services nationwide. During the launch, Mr Ganduje praised the leadership for undertaking this extensive review, noting that the new regulations mark a critical step forward in enhancing airport governance. He highlighted the importance of adapting regulatory frameworks to match the dynamic nature of the aviation industry, ensuring that the authority can respond effectively to both local and international challenges. Ms Kuku outlined several key objectives of the 2025 Bye-Laws, which include providing a clear operational guideline for all personnel working under FAAN, as well as for airport users and stakeholders. These regulations aim to promote a safer, more secure, and economically sustainable environment for air travel. They also seek to reinforce FAAN’s dedication to maintaining high standards of regulatory compliance and service quality. The new bye-laws incorporate provisions designed to support technological advancements in airport management. One such initiative involves the implementation of a facial recognition system known as V-Pass, which is intended to streamline passenger processing and enhance security measures. This innovation reflects FAAN’s broader strategy to integrate modern technology into its operations, thereby improving the overall travel experience for passengers. In addition to these technological upgrades, the 2025 Bye-Laws emphasize the need for greater transparency and accountability within the organization. They outline procedures for handling complaints, managing resources, and ensuring ethical conduct among employees. These changes are expected to foster a more professional and reliable work environment, ultimately contributing to better service delivery. Looking ahead, FAAN plans to roll out the new bye-laws gradually, beginning with pilot programs at select airports before implementing them nationwide. Training sessions for staff and stakeholders are also scheduled to ensure proper understanding and adherence to the updated regulations. The authority has expressed confidence that these reforms will significantly enhance the performance and reputation of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
