This surge comes amid heightened security measures following the tragic deaths of two American citizens shot by federal agents earlier this year. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin has emphasized the need for stronger enforcement actions, marking a departure from a relative slowdown in arrests observed during the previous months. In the first 11 days of July, ICE conducted 16,213 arrests, averaging more than 1,400 per day. This figure represents a slight increase from the previous month, which saw a daily average of over 1,300 arrests, culminating in a record-breaking 40,000 arrests in June. The acceleration in enforcement activities underscores a renewed focus on removing individuals deemed a threat to public safety. In Houston, Texas, ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) branch reported arresting nearly 260 criminal aliens in the first half of July. These arrests targeted individuals with serious criminal histories, including convictions for sex offenses, aggravated assaults, burglary, robbery, theft, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and sex trafficking. According to ICE officials, these individuals posed a direct threat to the community and had repeatedly violated laws both within and outside the United States. The arrests included members of several notorious gangs such as MS-13, Surenos-13, Tango Blast, Paisas, Southwest Cholos, Brown Pride Locos, Mara-18, and the Tiny Boys. These individuals collectively had entered the U.S. illegally 535 times and faced a total of 642 arrests. Among these, over 400 offenses were linked to harm or endangerment to Americans and residents. The specific charges against those arrested varied widely. There were 11 total sex offenses, including four cases involving child sex offenses. Additionally, there were 70 convictions for aggravated assault, assault, or battery, along with 77 convictions for burglary, robbery, or theft. Other notable charges included 11 drug trafficking convictions, one kidnapping conviction, three sex trafficking convictions, and numerous convictions for hit-and-run incidents and weapons-related offenses. Several high-profile arrests highlighted the severity of the situation. Cesar Arain Villalobos Villagomez, a 37-year-old criminal illegal alien from Mexico, was wanted in his home country for aggravated kidnapping. Neri Farid Calix Ardon, a 31-year-old previously deported individual from Honduras, had been convicted of sexual assault of a child and illegal reentry. Kevin Salvador Madrid Ochoa, another Honduran national, had been convicted of online solicitation of a minor. Other notable arrests included Denis Roberto Hernandez Castaneda, a 37-year-old previously deported individual from Honduras, who had multiple convictions ranging from statutory rape to possession of a controlled substance. Raymundo Toledo Flores, a 47-year-old from Mexico, had a history of repeated illegal entries into the U.S., along with multiple convictions for theft, DWI, and other offenses. Kiet Anh Nguyen, a 53-year-old from Vietnam, had extensive criminal records including burglary, theft, and drug possession. These arrests reflect a broader strategy by ICE to target individuals with criminal backgrounds who pose a risk to public safety.
