RWE has carried out the controlled demolition of a towering chimney at the former coal-fired power plant Frimmersdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. The operation took place on August 29, 2026, with the company detonating a structure standing approximately 200 meters high. The rubble left behind weighs around 14,000 tons. This marks another step in the ongoing decommissioning process of the site, which was once one of the largest brown coal power plants in the world. The demolition occurred precisely at 11:00 local time. The chimney, located on the grounds of the now-defunct facility near the Garzweiler open-pit mine, stood nearly as tall as the Rheinturm in Düsseldorf. The removal of this prominent landmark brings the physical dismantling of the complex closer to completion. The site, situated directly adjacent to the mining area, had previously featured up to 36 cooling towers, making it a notable industrial feature during its operational years in the early 1970s. Frimmersdorf was recognized globally as the largest brown coal power station in the world during the early 1970s. Its scale and significance were reflected in its architectural features, including the extensive network of cooling towers.
