Estonia is considering acquiring Israel’s David Sling missile defense system as part of its efforts to enhance long-range air defenses. The nation aims to invest over €1 billion in a new long-range ground-based air defense system to safeguard critical infrastructure. In addition to the Israeli offering, Estonia is evaluating options such as the American Patriot and the Franco-Italian SAMP/T, according to reports from its state-run ERR news outlet. The Estonian Defence Ministry has received around five bids from different manufacturers, with varying delivery timelines. Some suppliers could complete the installation within two to three years, while others might require up to eight or nine years. The Centre for Defence Investment (ECDI) has conducted a thorough analysis of available systems, focusing not just on initial acquisition costs but also on lifecycle expenses, including personnel, training, and ongoing maintenance. Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur noted that the decision-making process is expected to conclude within the next two months, following which the ECDI will initiate contract discussions. The chosen system will support Germany’s medium-range IRIS-T air defense systems, with the first unit already delivered in June and two additional units set for deployment by the end of the year. Pevkur emphasized the challenges associated with U.S.-origin equipment, particularly due to their widespread use in Ukraine and the resulting strain on ammunition supplies. He highlighted the need for collaboration with vendors to ensure the feasibility of proposed solutions. The David Sling system is capable of intercepting tactical ballistic missiles, medium- to long-range rockets, and cruise missiles within a range of 40 to 300 kilometers. Developed through a joint effort between Israel and the United States, the David Sling system involves collaboration between Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and American defense firm Raytheon, known for producing the Patriot missile system. Additional components were crafted by Elta, a division of Israel Aerospace Industries, responsible for the system’s radar, and Elisra, a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, handling command and control functions. Over the past decade, Europe has increasingly adopted Israeli air defense technologies, driven by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the urgent need for reliable, battle-tested systems. Multiple Israeli systems, including Iron Dome, David Sling, and Spyder, have been selected by European nations. Recently, Greece and Israel finalized a €3 billion defense export pact, marking one of the largest such deals in Israel’s history. The agreement entails designing and delivering a comprehensive national air defense framework for Greece’s Achilles Shield initiative. This integrated system will incorporate David Sling, BARAK MX, and SPYDER systems, all of which are operational within Israel’s air defense network. Germany secured the Arrow 3 system through a €4 billion agreement, providing exoatmospheric interception capabilities. Finland acquired David Sling following its NATO accession, securing a deal valued at over €300 million. Central European countries have similarly shown interest in Israeli systems. The Czech Republic has received the Spyder medium-range system, Slovakia has opted for the Barak MX, and Romania is reportedly in talks to acquire the Iron Dome, potentially making it the first European nation to deploy this renowned short-range interceptor.
