The illness, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, spreads through the consumption of contaminated food or water. While the exact origin of the outbreak remains under investigation, preliminary findings point to a connection with a widely known fast-food chain. The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have identified shredded iceberg lettuce served at some locations of Taco Bell as a potential source of contamination. Health officials emphasized that while they have not yet confirmed all cases are directly connected to a single source, the sudden and concentrated rise in infections strongly suggests that the majority of cases stem from a common exposure. If this hypothesis proves correct, the outbreak would represent the largest recorded incidence of cyclosporiasis in the country’s history.
