This extraordinary allowance is designed to cover situations previously left unprotected, such as workers who cannot attend their workplace due to evacuation orders, loss of housing, or lack of basic services. The proposed law would allow companies to receive state funding to cover salaries and contributions for workers unable to perform their duties because of the fire-related disruptions. Nevertheless, officials believe further expansion of such protections is necessary given the increasing frequency of such events. Yolanda Díaz, head of the Ministry of Labor, has stressed that the new policy seeks to protect workers caught in a legal gray area, those who cannot access their workplaces or must sleep elsewhere due to the fires. These individuals currently lack a formal mechanism to secure income or benefits, and the new law aims to fill this gap.
