This incident highlights a growing trend in which young European travelers are being lured into acting as unwitting couriers, often under the guise of a free vacation and financial incentives. The method used by these criminal networks involves enticing young individuals, often students or recent graduates, with promises of a complimentary trip to Thailand, some spending money, and a chance to party. In exchange, they are asked to transport cannabis-filled suitcases back to Europe via commercial flights. The rewards can amount to around €6,000, making the proposition particularly attractive to those in need of quick cash. One such individual was Alma*, a 22-year-old Swedish woman who found herself at the center of this operation. On March 19, 2025, she boarded flight OS199 from Vienna to Frankfurt. As her plane prepared for takeoff, customs officers scanned her checked baggage and noticed suspicious items. Upon further inspection, one of the two suitcases, marked with her name, was discovered to contain 20 kilograms of cannabis valued at approximately €66,000. Police swiftly intervened, arresting Alma before she could board the aircraft. Alma initially claimed the cannabis was for personal consumption over the course of a year, but authorities quickly dispelled this claim. Her arrest underscores the risks associated with participating in such smuggling operations. Many of those caught have been young people seeking financial relief, often through friends, social media connections, or even informal lenders known as “credit sharks.” These individuals are frequently unaware of the legal consequences until they are apprehended.
