Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is intensifying food insecurity, according to the United Nations World Food Programme’s acting executive director, Carl Skau. Speaking during a visit to Ituri province, Skau highlighted the growing impact of the epidemic on local communities, emphasizing that the situation represents a “crisis on top of a crisis.” He noted that while food insecurity was already severe, with over five million people facing emergency levels of hunger, the current Ebola outbreak is exacerbating the problem. In Ituri alone, 1.9 million individuals are classified as being in emergency food insecurity, and across 48 affected health zones, more than 2.7 million people face acute food shortages, including 628,000 in urgent need of assistance. Skau explained that the Ebola crisis has disrupted local markets and transportation networks, making it harder for families to access basic necessities. This disruption has forced many to prioritize immediate survival over adhering to public health guidelines. The World Food Programme has responded by delivering over 160,000 hot meals to patients, their close contacts, and frontline healthcare workers in 17 treatment and isolation centers. According to Skau, ensuring food access is crucial to maintaining compliance with Ebola prevention measures. Without adequate nutrition, he warned, people will remain focused on daily survival rather than following medical advice. The Ebola outbreak, which began on May 15, has now recorded 3,360 confirmed cases, including 1,487 deaths. Health officials describe it as the fastest-spreading outbreak in history, with new infections occurring at an alarming rate. Despite efforts to contain the virus through expanded testing and treatment facilities, the disease continues to spread beyond the capacity of local authorities to monitor effectively. Officials have expressed concern that the rapid transmission could overwhelm existing resources and further strain an already fragile healthcare system. In Bunia, a city located near the epicenter of the outbreak, healthcare workers have staged a strike demanding unpaid wages. The protest highlights broader challenges faced by medical staff, who are working under extreme pressure with limited support. The strike has raised concerns about the sustainability of the response effort, as trained personnel play a vital role in identifying and treating cases. While the World Food Programme focuses on addressing nutritional needs, the ongoing labor disputes underscore the complex interplay between public health and economic stability in the region. Eastern Congo has long been plagued by conflict, which has displaced millions and contributed to widespread poverty. The combination of armed violence, weak governance, and environmental degradation has created conditions ripe for humanitarian crises. The current food insecurity crisis reflects these underlying vulnerabilities, with the Ebola outbreak serving as a catalyst for increased hardship. Local populations, already struggling to meet basic needs, are now facing additional barriers to accessing food, clean water, and essential services. As the outbreak continues to evolve, international organizations and local governments are working to coordinate relief efforts. However, logistical challenges, political instability, and resource limitations pose significant obstacles. The World Food Programme’s focus on providing immediate sustenance aims to alleviate suffering while supporting longer-term recovery. With the number of cases rising, the urgency of addressing both the health and nutritional emergencies becomes ever greater. The coming weeks will likely determine whether the combined response can prevent further deterioration of the situation.
