Napad džihadistov v Maliju: v zasedi ubitih najmanj 50 vojakov

Islamistični borci in tuaregski separatisti so v smrtnem napadu na severu Malija ubili vsaj 50 vojakov malijške vojske in ujeli vsaj 24. Napad se je zgodil, ko je konvoj na poti v Gao zapustil mesto Anefis in se znašel v zasedi.

In northern Mali, Islamist militants and Tuareg separatists have killed at least 50 soldiers in a coordinated ambush, marking one of the deadliest attacks on the country’s military in recent years. The attack occurred near the strategic town of Anefis on Saturday, according to military officials and a local politician close to the junta. The convoy was heading toward the major city of Gao, which has been a focal point of conflict in the region. The assault left more than 50 troops dead and at least 24 captured, according to the politician speaking to AFP. The attack took place amid ongoing clashes in the area, with intense fighting around Anefis in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the jihadist group Jamaah Nusrallah al-Muqaddasah (JNIM), linked to al-Qaeda, and the separatist Front de Libération de l'Azawad (FLA) launched a large-scale offensive that temporarily seized control of parts of the city. During that operation, they surrounded a military base defended by the Malian army and Russian paramilitary forces from the African Corps. According to a source within the Malian military, some of their fighters were “executed” during the earlier confrontation, highlighting the severity of the situation. The current attack appears to be part of a broader strategy by the coalition of Tuareg rebels and jihadists against the Malian government. JNIM and FLA have claimed responsibility for the ambush, which they described as retaliation for the continued presence of foreign forces in the region. The Malian military initially did not disclose casualty figures but later confirmed that its convoy had fallen into an ambush laid by armed terrorist groups. The incident has raised concerns over coordination and tactics within the armed forces, particularly regarding how such a high number of casualties could occur. Russian paramilitary forces, known as the African Corps, reportedly arrived in Gao shortly before the attack and suffered no losses. However, there were reports of communication issues between the Russian forces and the Malian army. A local politician noted that these coordination problems may have contributed to the failure of the military response. The Malian military is currently investigating whether tactical errors or other factors made their forces vulnerable to the ambush. Since 2012, Mali has been embroiled in a violent conflict involving extremist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, as well as Tuareg separatists and criminal militias. The country has experienced two military coups since 2020 and 2021, leading to the establishment of a military junta that has distanced itself from Western allies, including France. In response to the security crisis, the junta has increasingly relied on Russian support, deploying Russian-led operations and training programs. The current situation underscores the deepening instability in northern Mali, where multiple factions continue to challenge state authority. The involvement of both jihadist networks and separatist movements highlights the complexity of the conflict, which has drawn international attention and intervention. Despite efforts by regional and global actors to stabilize the region, the violence persists, with civilians often caught in the crossfire. As the Malian military continues its investigation into the ambush, the broader implications for security and governance remain uncertain.
