A professor at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb has been charged with domestic violence, according to recent reports. The accused, Dominko Vuletic, was recently arrested over allegations of sexual harassment against a female student. Now, he faces additional charges related to domestic abuse, which could lead to his trial soon. Vuletic, an extraordinary professor at the Faculty of Economics, had previously faced accusations of inappropriate conduct. In 2020, he was reported for alleged indecent behavior towards a 20-year-old girl. At that time, he was still employed as a lecturer at the faculty. Despite these allegations, Vuletic continued his academic career, eventually advancing to the position of extraordinary professor. The new charges stem from a period between 2019 and 2022 during which a close person to Vuletic allegedly suffered both verbal and physical abuse. Details of this case remain confidential to protect the victim's identity. According to the indictment confirmed by the Municipal Criminal Court in Zagreb, the abuse occurred over three years. Although there were multiple reports of such incidents, including sexual advances, Vuletic did not face any professional consequences until recently. The initial incident involving the 20-year-old student reportedly took place during political activities. Vuletic, who was then a member of the party Živi zid, met the student through these activities. He exchanged phone numbers with her and sent messages offering academic collaboration. However, according to the police report, Vuletic allegedly pressured the student into a situation where he touched her inappropriately. She fled the scene and informed the police, providing them with messages Vuletic had sent, some of which contained offensive language. Despite media exposure of this case earlier this year, Vuletic declined to comment, citing the ongoing legal process. His arrest in mid-2020 for the alleged misconduct with the student did not immediately affect his employment status at the Faculty of Economics. It was only after recent media coverage that the faculty decided to take action, banning him from interacting with students. The Faculty of Economics issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to the principle of presumed innocence and the right to a fair trial. It stated that it would respond promptly to any claims that might threaten student safety, the integrity of teaching, or the trust within the academic community. The faculty also highlighted its responsibility to protect the reputation and dignity of its many employees who diligently perform their duties. The faculty will continue monitoring the situation and will provide updates to the public when legally and institutionally appropriate. This decision comes amid growing scrutiny of Vuletic’s actions, with the university finally taking steps to address concerns raised by the allegations against him.
