The U.S. government has barred several journalists from attending the upcoming G20 finance ministers' meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, sparking criticism over press freedom. Reporters from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and the news agency Bloomberg were denied accreditation for the talks, which are set to take place starting Monday. The German Journalists' Association (DJV) called the move a clear violation of press freedom and urged Germany's vice chancellor and finance minister, Lars Klingbeil, to advocate for the affected media outlets during the summit. German officials have intervened with the U.S. administration on behalf of The New York Times and Bloomberg, according to sources close to the German delegation. Jim Tankersley, the New York Times' Berlin correspondent, initially received a rejection notice but was eventually granted access after the intervention. However, another New York Times reporter, Alan Rappeport, who has covered U.S. financial matters since 2017, was not granted entry. Efforts by the German government to secure accreditation for Bloomberg reporters were unsuccessful despite high-level diplomatic engagement, according to the delegation. The U.S. Treasury Department issues accreditations for the event. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Associated Press that decisions regarding accreditation had nothing to do with the political views of the journalists. He did not provide specific reasons for the rejections. Bloomberg criticized the denial of accreditation, stating it undermines media freedom and public accountability. The company vowed to continue advocating for unrestricted press access while reporting accurately on developments. The New York Times sharply condemned the decision, calling it not only another troubling attempt by the government to undermine independent journalism but also an effort to avoid public scrutiny. The newspaper emphasized that the G20 discussions would cover critical topics such as the Iran conflict, sanctions, and inflation, making them highly relevant to both global economics and the American public. The U.S. Treasury Department noted that nearly 300 representatives from around a dozen countries would attend the two-day meetings and have access to policymakers. It stated that this responsibility comes with the obligation to disseminate factual information in accordance with established journalistic standards. The DJV linked the controversy to ongoing tensions between former President Donald Trump and media organizations. Mika Beuster, president of the DJV, pointed out that Trump’s lawsuits against The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) demonstrate his intent to silence critics in the media. International politics should not ignore these conflicts, he argued. Trump has been engaged in a prolonged battle against media outlets he deems too critical or left-leaning since the start of his second term. He has filed lawsuits against The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times and ordered reductions in federal subsidies for public broadcasters. At press conferences, he frequently engages in verbal sparring with journalists he finds inconvenient and regularly insults them. Recently, he accused NBC reporter Kristen Welker of inaccurate reporting and demanded she be reprimanded or punished.
