A new study warns that dolphin-feeding tourism is accelerating the decline of the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin population off Bunbury, Western Australia. Published in the journal Oikos, the research suggests that without intervention, the population could drop from 350 individuals to just eight over the next century. The findings highlight how human interactions, particularly feeding practices, compound existing environmental pressures, threatening the long-term survival of these marine mammals. The study, led by Dr. Valeria Senigaglia from Queensland University of Technology’s School of Biology and Environmental Science, analyzed data collected over a decade from systematic monitoring of the dolphin population near Bunbury. Moreover, the study found that feeding correlates with reduced reproductive success and lower survival rates among calves. However, the exact impact of food provisioning alone remains difficult to isolate due to the complex interplay of multiple stressors affecting the species. In addition to feeding, the dolphins face numerous other challenges. Climate change is altering ocean temperatures and currents, disrupting prey availability and migration patterns. Recreational watercraft activity introduces noise and physical disturbances, while disease outbreaks, such as morbillivirus, are increasingly common in marine ecosystems. Harmful algal blooms, oil spills, and habitat degradation further compound these risks. The study simulated several scenarios, including one where a morbillivirus outbreak occurred alongside human disturbances, leading to a sharp rise in calf mortality. Another scenario considered the cumulative effect of all these stressors, resulting in a dramatic decline in population numbers. To counteract these negative outcomes, the researchers proposed a management strategy inspired by conservation efforts in the Moray Firth, Scotland. There, restrictions on feeding and reductions in human disturbance helped improve calf survival and boost fertility rates. Applying similar measures in Bunbury, such as banning feeding, creating protected zones, and limiting industrial and recreational activities, could potentially reverse the trend. According to the model, these interventions could double the chances of population recovery over the next century. The study underscores the need for stricter regulations and greater public awareness around dolphin-feeding practices. While the immediate effects of feeding may not be visible, the long-term consequences are clear. By reducing direct human interference, conservationists hope to enhance the dolphins’ ability to cope with other environmental stressors. As the research highlights, protecting these intelligent creatures requires a multifaceted approach that addresses both anthropogenic and ecological factors.
