A new study published in Scientific Reports suggests that widespread distrust of mainstream media could contribute to the spread of vaccine-related conspiracy theories. Led by Professor Hitoshi Yamamoto of Rissho University, the research analyzed five years of longitudinal survey data collected between 2020 and 2024, focusing on how attitudes toward media and institutional trust influenced beliefs in vaccine conspiracies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study tracked responses from the same group of participants each year, examining patterns in media consumption, skepticism, and perceived levels of media literacy. Researchers found that vaccine conspiracy beliefs appeared to stem from two separate yet interconnected factors. One form was tied to general distrust of institutions, including government bodies and pharmaceutical companies, while the other involved more extreme and implausible claims, such as the belief that vaccines contain microchips. These two types of beliefs showed different frequencies and correlations with other variables. Conspiracy beliefs based on institutional distrust were more commonly reported and were linked to sustained skepticism toward mainstream media. Over time, this skepticism grew stronger among individuals who consistently doubted the reliability of traditional news sources. In contrast, beliefs involving highly implausible claims, such as the idea that vaccines include tracking devices, were held by a smaller portion of the population. Despite their lower prevalence, these extreme views gained visibility through online platforms, particularly social media, where they circulated more widely. The research also highlighted the significance of its focus on Japan, a country known for having a relatively non-polarized media landscape compared to many Western nations. This context made the study’s findings especially noteworthy, as it demonstrated that even in societies with high levels of social consensus, conspiracy beliefs can still take root. The researchers emphasized that addressing misinformation requires more than just debunking false claims, it also demands an understanding of how and why distrust in institutions and media develops and sustains itself. Professor Yamamoto explained that public discourse often centers on the most extreme examples of conspiracy theory, but his team’s findings indicate that more common forms of skeptical thinking are deeply connected to long-standing doubts about authority and media credibility. He stressed that combating misinformation must involve not only correcting factual errors but also tackling the underlying psychological and sociological factors that drive distrust. The study’s methodology included analyzing detailed survey responses and tracking changes in attitudes over time. By comparing data from multiple waves of the survey, researchers were able to identify trends and correlations that might have been missed in shorter-term studies. This approach allowed for a nuanced understanding of how exposure to media and shifts in societal trust interacted with the formation of conspiracy beliefs. As the study underscores, the relationship between media skepticism and vaccine conspiracies is complex. While some individuals develop mistrust due to direct experiences or repeated exposure to conflicting narratives, others may internalize broader cultural or political sentiments. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing effective strategies to counter misinformation and promote public health initiatives. The findings offer valuable insights into the mechanisms behind conspiracy beliefs and highlight the need for targeted interventions that address both factual accuracy and the emotional underpinnings of distrust.
