In a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, Democrats have overtaken Republicans as the preferred choice among American voters for managing the economy, marking the first such shift in nearly a decade. The survey, conducted between Wednesday and Monday, revealed that President Donald Trump’s approval rating has dropped to 35%, down from 37% in a previous poll taken last month. This decline comes amid rising energy costs linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran, which has placed pressure on Trump’s re-election prospects and the broader Republican Party heading into the November midterm elections. The poll results indicate that 37% of registered voters believe the Democratic Party has a superior economic strategy compared to the Republican Party, which garnered 36%. A further 27% expressed uncertainty or believed another party would perform better. This represents a notable reversal from earlier periods when Republicans generally held the upper hand on economic issues throughout much of Trump’s first term, during Biden’s presidency, and even into Trump’s second term. The erosion of the Republican advantage on economic matters has accelerated in recent months, particularly after the United States-Israeli attacks on Iran in February, which triggered a protracted conflict. Gasoline prices have climbed by more than 25% since the start of this conflict, with the average price per gallon increasing by over a dollar. Trump has attributed these actions to dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities, limiting its capacity to threaten regional adversaries, and fostering conditions for Iranians to challenge their religious leaders. However, the surge in fuel prices has strained household budgets across the country. According to the Reuters/Ipsos poll, which collected responses from 4,505 U.S. adults, 42% of registered voters indicated they would support a Democratic candidate in upcoming congressional elections, while 37% favored a Republican. Independents in the survey chose Democrats over Republicans by a margin of 12 percentage points. With Republicans currently holding slim majorities in both chambers of Congress, the outcomes of the November 3 elections could significantly alter the balance of power. Despite the findings of the poll, Trump has consistently downplayed public dissatisfaction with his leadership. On Monday, shortly before the release of the latest Reuters/Ipsos data, he shared a message on his Truth Social platform stating, “My REAL Polling Numbers, not those made up by the Fake News Media, are the best they have ever been.” His comments reflect a persistent skepticism toward traditional polling methods and media coverage. The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online and nationally, carries a margin of error of 2 percentage points. While it provides insight into the prevailing sentiment among voters, the actual dynamics of congressional elections are more intricate. Out of the 435 seats in the House of Representatives, only around three dozen are anticipated to be fiercely contested, while approximately eight Senate seats are likely to see close races. These factors suggest that the overall electoral landscape might not be as dramatically transformed as the poll suggests. The shifting perceptions regarding economic stewardship highlight the challenges facing both major parties as they prepare for the midterms. For Republicans, maintaining their congressional majorities appears increasingly difficult given the current economic climate and voter preferences reflected in the latest survey. Meanwhile, Democrats are capitalizing on the moment to position themselves as the more viable alternative in key battleground states. As the election cycle progresses, the impact of these changing sentiments will become clearer through subsequent polls and campaign activities.
