They rejected the body’s portrayal of Turkey’s 1974 military operation on the island, calling it “baseless, irrational and despicable.” Officials accused the European Parliament of failing to acknowledge alleged attacks against Turkish Cypriots and claimed the decision reflected a “one-sided approach based on Greek propaganda.” The Turkish government has consistently maintained that its actions in Cyprus were defensive, aimed at protecting the rights of Turkish Cypriots within the framework of the 1974 peace agreement. The European Parliament’s resolution, passed earlier this month, condemned the 1974 operation as a violation of international law and called for accountability for alleged human rights abuses.
