A coroner has issued a stark warning about the dangers of cocaine use after the unexpected death of a hospital chef, Keith McGivern, whose case has sparked concerns about drug-related health risks. The inquest into Mr McGivern’s death took place at the Dublin District Coroner’s Court, revealing that the 49-year-old man was found dead in his home on 14 October 2025. His death followed a period during which his absence from work raised alarm among colleagues, leading to a search that uncovered troubling findings. Mr McGivern, who lived on St Anthony’s Road in Dublin 8, had worked at Coombe Hospital for nearly two decades. Concerns about his wellbeing emerged when he missed two consecutive days of work. A sister, Ashling McGivern, recounted how she was contacted by a colleague who noticed his absence. She went to his apartment, accompanied by his boss and another coworker, after failing to reach him. Upon entering, she found her brother lying on his bed in a distressing position, prompting immediate action. Emergency services arrived shortly afterward. Garda Niamh Bailey reported that the scene revealed a substantial number of empty alcohol cans and a small quantity of a white powder believed to be cocaine. A doctor assessed the situation and determined that Mr McGivern had likely died around 12 hours prior. There was no indication of forced entry or signs of a struggle, suggesting the death occurred under circumstances that remained unclear. Relatives expressed confusion over the absence of Mr McGivern’s mobile phone, which he was known to carry constantly. Despite this mystery, the coroner, Cróna Gallagher, acknowledged it as an unusual detail but noted that it would not significantly alter the findings. Medical records indicated that Mr McGivern had no prior history of substance abuse, making his recent drug use all the more alarming. Post-mortem tests revealed high levels of cocaine in Mr McGivern’s system, along with cocaethylene, a dangerous compound formed when cocaine is consumed alongside alcohol. Dr Gallagher explained that the combination heightened the drug’s effects, increasing the likelihood of severe cardiovascular complications. Additionally, the coroner noted that Mr McGivern had an unusually narrow coronary artery, 80% blocked, for a non-smoker of his age, which compounded the risk of a sudden cardiac event. The coroner concluded that Mr McGivern’s death was caused by cardiac arrhythmia or a cardiac arrest triggered by cocaine use. She emphasized that even low levels of cocaine can lead to life-threatening conditions, reinforcing the message that there is no safe threshold for its consumption. While the narrowing of his coronary artery played a contributory role, the primary cause was attributed to the toxic impact of cocaine on his heart. Dr Gallagher extended her condolences to the grieving family, acknowledging their shock upon learning of their relative’s drug use. The inquest highlighted the need for greater awareness of the risks associated with cocaine, particularly when combined with alcohol, and underscored the importance of early intervention in cases involving substance misuse.
