Four simultaneous wildfires have erupted in Medellín, Colombia, escalating concerns over the country's growing environmental crisis. The fires broke out on Friday, affecting four distinct areas within the city: Rodeo Alto, Santa Elena, Alto de Las Moras, and the district of San Cristóbal. Local authorities confirmed the presence of active fire fronts, prompting urgent alerts across the region. The situation has intensified with reports indicating that smoke columns were visible throughout the western urban sectors of the city. The initial blaze originated in the area of La Hondonada, located in the upper part of Comuna 16 in Belén, specifically in Rodeo Alto. This fire quickly generated thick plumes of smoke, drawing attention from residents and emergency services alike. Shortly after, the mayor of Medellín, Federico Gutiérrez, announced via his social media account that firefighters were responding to a wildfire in the green zone of the upper part of Comuna 16. He emphasized that the team was working to contain the situation. Gutiérrez later confirmed two additional fire points, stating that crews were simultaneously addressing three separate incidents: one in Santa Elena, another in Alto de Las Moras, and a third in San Cristóbal. The complexity of the situation escalated further when the fire spread to Cerro de las Tres Cruces, causing alarm among nearby communities such as Loma de los Bernal and Altavista. In response, the Department of Risk Management for Disasters (DAGRD) dispatched two new rescue teams equipped with specialized equipment. These teams joined the three existing firefighting units already deployed in the area, all working under the coordination of the DAGRD. As of the latest update, there have been no reports of injuries resulting from the fires. However, the emergence of these new fire fronts has complicated the overall scenario, contributing to a broader pattern of wildfires that have been observed in other regions of Colombia during recent weeks. In Tolima, one of the most affected departments, the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) is coordinating efforts against 11 active fire fronts. Aerial operations are underway alongside the involvement of civil defense forces, the national army, police, and local firefighting brigades. The governor of the region, Adriana Magalí Matiz, noted that 13 fires have been recorded across 12 municipalities, with one particularly concerning incident impacting three towns: Suárez, Carmen de Apicalá, and Cunday. Since August 1st, Tolima has been experiencing continuous wildfires, which have led to the mobilization of over 600 firefighters and aerial resources. The impact has been severe, with approximately 22,000 livestock left without food. At its peak, the region saw 31 concurrent fire fronts, highlighting the scale of the challenge faced by local authorities. The ongoing wildfires underscore the increasing pressure on emergency services and the need for sustained intervention to mitigate further damage.
