Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu compared YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy to the mythological villain Kansa on Saturday, alleging that Reddy obstructed the wedding of his niece at the family palace in Bengaluru. Speaking to reporters at his residence, Naidu stated that Reddy lacked political, moral, and family values while refusing to allow the ceremony for his sister’s daughter. The dispute centers on the refusal to host the wedding of Y.S. Anjili Reddy at the Yelahanka Palace, a decision Naidu characterized as evidence of a dangerous mindset driven by destruction. The wedding is scheduled for November 25. Reports indicate that Jagan Reddy communicated his objection to his sister, Y.S. Sharmila, through their mother, citing security threats and breaches of privacy. Despite efforts by relatives to mediate, Sharmila was unable to secure permission to use the sprawling family compound. Consequently, she sought an alternative venue in Bengaluru for the event. Anjili Reddy had become engaged last month. The incident has reignited long-standing tensions regarding the division of family assets, a conflict that began after the death of former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in a helicopter crash in 2009. The rift deepened after Jagan assumed the role of Chief Minister in 2019. Sharmila subsequently established a political party in neighboring Telangana before joining the Indian National Congress in 2024. In his address, Naidu emphasized that Sharmila holds a share in the family property yet faces unfair treatment from her brother. He drew a direct parallel between Reddy and Kansa, the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna who attempted to kill the deity. Naidu urged the public to recognize what he described as Reddy’s destructive approach. Beyond the familial dispute, the Chief Minister used the platform to accuse the YSR Congress Party of instigating unrest across multiple districts during the ongoing local body elections. He listed Punganur, Rayachoti, Kanigiri, Darsi, Kadapa, Thamballapalle, and Tirupati as locations affected by alleged disturbances. To substantiate these claims, Naidu displayed video footage showing purported acts of violence and attacks on candidates. He specifically mentioned incidents where nomination papers were allegedly seized at the Kanigiri nomination center and the Jana Sena office was targeted in Thamballapalle. Naidu further alleged that groups recruited from Punjab were deployed within the state to intimidate residents. While independent verification of these specific violent episodes was not possible, several candidates have claimed they faced barriers when attempting to file nomination papers. Naidu asserted that his administration would adhere strictly to the rules set by the State Election Commission. The YSR Congress Party rejected Naidu’s accusations, labeling them personal attacks intended to distract from alleged misconduct by TDP cadres. In response, the party published a letter from Jagan Reddy to Sharmila detailing his reasons for opposing the wedding at the Yelahanka Palace, reiterating concerns over safety and privacy. The party statement argued that Naidu was using family matters to obscure facts regarding electoral irregularities. Conversely, the YSR Congress Party accused the ruling TDP of utilizing police resources and party workers to hinder opposition candidates from submitting nominations. They alleged this conduct undermined democratic processes through planned intimidation. The party demanded the imposition of President’s Rule in Andhra Pradesh and requested the deployment of central forces to ensure fair elections. The legal battle extended to the Supreme Court, prompting the Andhra Pradesh Election Commission to announce a revised schedule on Thursday. Elections for 100 urban local bodies, which include 13 municipal corporations, are currently slated for November 1. Vote counting is scheduled for November 3.
