Centros de datos emiten lo equivalente a un país con 20 millones de habitantes

According to a study published by insurance company Allianz Trade, data centers emitted 286 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2025, equivalent to Kazakhstan’s emissions in 2024. These centers store servers and infrastructure linked to artificial intelligence. If current trends continue, environmental damage costs could reach 529 billion Colombian pesos annually by 2030, up from 44 billion pesos currently. Emissions exceeded estimates, with 76% attributed to increased energy demand from non-renewable sources like fossil fuels, which account for 70% of global emissions. The remaining 23% came from constructing new data centers. AI accounted for 15–20% of data center energy consumption in 2025 but is expected to rise to 40% by 2030. The UN has called for AI companies to transition fully to renewable energy and disclose their carbon footprint by 2030. Additionally, data centers could consume enough water to meet the basic needs of 1.3 billion people annually by 2030. In the Amazon region, deforestation has reduced the number of trees available to absorb emissions.
