Diputados affiliated with the UDI party have demanded the return of public funds paid out in connection with the case of Bernarda Vera, a woman who was listed as a victim of forced disappearance in the Rettig Report but has since been found alive in Argentina. The lawmakers, Flor Weisse, head of the UDI parliamentary bloc, and Sergio Bobadilla, her deputy, along with former member of the Chamber of Deputies' Human Rights Commission, Daniel Lilayu, have called on the government to initiate legal actions aimed at recovering these funds. This comes after DNA tests confirmed that the woman identified as Bernarda Vera had been living in Argentina, a finding verified by the National Forensic Science Service (SML) and communicated to her family by Minister of Human Rights Affairs Álvaro Mesa Latorre. The discovery followed a report by Chilevisión in late September 2025 that located a woman in Argentina believed to be Bernarda Vera. This information has now been validated by the judiciary. The woman is linked to an incident that occurred on October 10, 1973, near the Toltén River during the so-called "Liquiñe massacre," which resulted in judicial convictions. With this confirmation, the UDI legislators urged the executive branch and the State Defense Council (CDE) to take necessary measures to recover the resources given to Vera’s relatives over the years. They emphasized that if public money was fraudulently distributed for decades, it should be fully returned. According to the lawmakers, information obtained from the Institute of Social Security (IPS) revealed that a pension was granted to Vera's mother until her death and to her daughter until she turned 25. The daughter later received another economic benefit due to a disability, which continues to be paid monthly at nearly 800,000 Chilean pesos. The legislators criticized the state for recognizing someone as a victim while they were still alive and for providing substantial financial support to their family. They argued that the situation requires the government to pursue all possible avenues to reclaim the misused funds and hold accountable any potential responsibilities. In a separate development, the State Defense Council (CDE) filed a criminal complaint against María Carolina Inostroza Verdugo, sixth vice president of the Christian Democrat Party (DC) and current councilwoman of Penco, accusing her of repeated fraud and misuse of false commercial documents. The complaint, submitted by attorney Georgy Schubert and deemed admissible, alleges irregularities in the execution and reporting of two projects funded by the Government Regional (GORE) of the Biobío region through the National Fund for Regional Development (FNDR). The alleged misconduct dates back to 2021 when Inostroza, who simultaneously served as a councilwoman of Penco and a municipal official in Concepción, offered advisory services to the Neighborhood Board No. 4 of Penco to apply for competitive funding from the GORE. She allegedly managed the entire process, from preparing documentation to submitting expense reports for the approved projects. These included the "Effective Community Safety" project, valued at 3 million pesos, intended for purchasing security cameras and conducting public safety training, and the "Promoting Family Health from the Neighborhood" initiative, worth 3.15 million pesos, aimed at acquiring fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency management workshops. Public funds were transferred to the neighborhood board in January 2022 to implement both initiatives. However, during the review of expenses, officials from the Biobío regional government detected inconsistencies indicating that the invoices presented by Inostroza were either forged or altered. According to the complaint, Inostroza submitted various honorarium receipts supposedly for professionals who conducted the trainings, claiming she had already paid them personally and requesting reimbursement via bank transfers to her personal account. The neighborhood board reportedly sent the money believing Inostroza had indeed covered the costs, which she did not, leading to the appropriation of 1.35 million pesos from public funds allocated for the projects. The CDE argues that the falsified invoices were used to obtain reimbursements from the neighborhood board and to support the expense reports submitted to the GORE of Biobío. The allegations include the submission of four invoices, two of which existed but had altered amounts, while the other two were issued under different names and had different sums. Professionals whose names appeared on the documents stated they had not provided the services mentioned or had issued invoices for significantly lower amounts. Meanwhile, Chile has announced the reactivation of its consular relations with Venezuela. Additionally, an investigation into cosmetic procedures covered by the Dipreca program for the wife of the general director of Carabineros has been initiated. There are also reports of a potential loss in the Sartor case reaching up to 190 million dollars. The Ministry of Health has requested the resignation of the regional health secretary in Arica following allegations of offering exclusive job opportunities to militants or children of Republicans. The government has attempted to downplay concerns regarding the resignations of several regional service directors amid criticism from officialist parliamentarians. Over the past five months, 30 regional service directors have left their positions for various reasons, according to the government. Recent resignations include the regional health director in Magallanes, Fabián Barrientos Andrade, who was formally charged with a sexual offense, and Patricio Ponce Arqueros from Housing and Cristián Cabezas Mundaca from Labor, who faced accusations of workplace harassment and abuse. The government has stated it will not tolerate individuals in governmental roles who fail to uphold integrity, transparency, and proper conduct. Some resignations were attributed to personal matters rather than controversies or criticisms.
