The trio, Stella Quaresma, Jorja Douglas, and Renée Downer, are currently finalizing their second album, Therapy at the Club, which marks a significant step forward in their artistic evolution. The project, released after nearly six months of intense work, reflects their growing confidence and creative independence. FLO first gained recognition in 2022 with their breakout hit Cardboard Box, which quickly became a staple on streaming platforms and social media. Since then, the group has continued to build momentum, winning Best R&B/Soul Act at the 2026 MOBO Awards and earning their first Grammy nomination. Their success has translated into substantial fan engagement, with over five million monthly Spotify listeners, 1.2 million TikTok followers, and nearly 58 million likes across platforms. Their recent campaign for Therapy at the Club has included a highly viewed NPR Tiny Desk performance and appearances on prominent U.S. podcasts, helping to reintroduce the group to American audiences. The band credits their growth and increased self-assurance to their hands-on involvement in every aspect of creating Therapy at the Club. For the first time, they took ownership of the entire process, from songwriting and vocal arrangements to production choices. Quaresma described the experience as “kind of been like a bit of a crash course in making music,” emphasizing how the album represents both a learning curve and a milestone in their careers. She added that the process felt akin to graduating with honors, highlighting their newfound maturity and skill. Douglas noted that while early in their career, the group sometimes relied on external input from writers and producers, they now feel empowered to contribute directly. “Sometimes you walk away from a session and people are surprised that you contributed, that you had ideas,” she said. Quaresma echoed this sentiment, explaining that the group no longer feels the need for such support. “In the past we’d kind of been okay with that,” she admitted. “But now we really don’t need that kind of crutch.” Downer emphasized that the greater creative control has led to the most authentic representation of the group to date. “We’re definitely a lot more grown up,” she said. “We’ve been a lot more involved, so this really is the best reflection of us at this point in time.” This sense of authenticity is particularly evident in the themes explored on the album, which center around love’s complexities, including heartbreak, healing, and the importance of friendship. The title track, Therapy at the Club, serves as a metaphor for finding solace and joy amid personal struggles. Quaresma explained that the title symbolizes the role friends play in helping others navigate tough times, offering a temporary escape through shared experiences and laughter. While R&B remains the core of FLO’s sound, the group has also sought to expand their sonic palette, aiming to incorporate more pop elements into their music. Quaresma expressed enthusiasm about blending genres and crafting bigger, more accessible tracks. “Making Therapy at the Club taught me how fun it is to really blend genres and to delve more into making pop music to make really big songs,” she said. One standout collaboration is Remedied, co-written with Grammy-winning songwriter Amy Allen, known for working with pop stars like Sabrina Carpenter and Tate McRae. The band’s approach to songwriting has evolved significantly. While they collaborated on their Grammy-nominated debut album Access All Areas, they opted for a different strategy with Therapy at the Club. Each member wrote songs independently before sharing their work with the group, allowing them to better understand and appreciate one another’s strengths. Quaresma highlighted the value of this method, noting that writing alone gave them fresh perspectives and deepened their appreciation for each other’s talents. “You don’t fully get to appreciate each other’s talents when you’re writing in a room of 10 people,” she said. “To go away and write songs, then show each other what we’d made, was really special.” This collaborative spirit also influenced the album’s guest features. One notable collaboration is Sex in Peace, their second joint effort with rising British R&B artist kwn. Quaresma penned the song before presenting it to the rest of the group, showcasing the band’s increasing autonomy and creative direction. As they continue to refine their sound and expand their reach, FLO remain focused on their goal of achieving everything they desire.
