Astronomers have made a groundbreaking discovery in space, detecting sugar molecules in interstellar space for the first time. This finding, which has been described as long-awaited, suggests that essential compounds for life's emergence could form even in the farthest reaches of the universe. The detection was made within a vast cloud of dust and gas near the center of the Milky Way, specifically in the region known as G+0.693-0.027. The sugar identified is called erythrose, a compound commonly found in fruits such as strawberries and used in skincare products on Earth. However, this particular instance occurs in a remote cosmic environment devoid of fruit orchards or beauty counters. According to Dr. Izaskun Jiménez-Serra, leader of the research team at the Spanish Center for Astrobiology, the discovery marks a pivotal moment in understanding how simple sugars might spread throughout the cosmos. She noted that erythrose, with four carbon atoms, is rare in laboratory settings but appears to form naturally under specific conditions in interstellar space. This finding challenges previous assumptions about the distribution of organic molecules in the universe. While some types of sugars have previously been detected in ancient meteorites and on the asteroid Bennu, direct evidence of their presence in interstellar clouds had remained elusive until now. The research team utilized radio telescopes to observe the molecular composition of the dust cloud. Initially, they sought simpler sugars composed of three carbon atoms, but instead encountered a distinct signature of erythrose. “I was very surprised to see the signal,” Jiménez-Serra remarked upon the unexpected discovery. In the journal Nature Astronomy, the researchers detailed the possible formation pathway of erythrose. They propose that two other organic molecules, glycolaldehyde and ethylene glycol, are necessary precursors. These substances are known to be abundant in certain parts of space. When these compounds interact on microscopic dust grains, chemical reactions can occur despite the extreme cold of interstellar environments, which typically hover around -250 degrees Celsius. The implications extend beyond mere scientific curiosity. The presence of sugar in space raises intriguing questions about the origins of life on Earth. Dust particles containing such compounds could potentially travel via comets to our planet. During the early history of Earth, a period known as the Late Heavy Bombardment saw numerous asteroids and comets collide with the surface. It is theorized that these celestial bodies may have delivered substantial quantities of organic materials, including erythrose. “This kind of organic rain was likely crucial,” Jiménez-Serra explained. “Such material could have contributed to the formation of prebiotic ‘broths,’ where the earliest bio-molecules emerged.” Professor Yoshihiro Furukawa from Tohoku University in Japan, who discovered sugars on asteroid Bennu, echoed similar sentiments. He believes that simple sugars brought by comets might have sparked the initial spark of life on Earth. “Simple sugars, formed in interstellar media, could have played a role in igniting life’s beginnings,” he added. The discovery opens new avenues for exploring the potential for life elsewhere in the universe. If sugars can originate in space and reach planets through cosmic delivery systems, it suggests that the building blocks of life may be more widespread than previously thought. This aligns with growing evidence that the ingredients for life are not unique to Earth but may be common throughout the cosmos.

  • Odkritje štirikarbonskega sladkorja v medzvezdnem prostoru· Nature Astronomy
