The event marked a community effort to provide solidarity and aid to those impacted by the disaster. The gathering took place after attendees purchased food and drinks from local shops before participating in the evening’s activities. Organized by Pierre-Alexandre Jeandel, a local entrepreneur, the event aimed to demonstrate civic responsibility and support for the town's commercial sector. In a video shared on social media, Jeandel called on residents to back the “institutions” of Le Porge, emphasizing the need for collective action during this difficult time. He expressed hope that similar events could be held multiple times over the coming days. Participants described the atmosphere as friendly and communal. Didier, a 53-year-old carpenter from Andernos, noted that such moments highlight the sense of citizenship among locals. Sylvain Sallaud, owner of a catering restaurant in Le Porge, had been forced to close his business for two weeks due to the fire damage. He welcomed the turnout, expressing optimism that life would eventually return to normal. The wildfires began on July 22 in Saumos and spread across 42,000 hectares, devastating 240 homes, with nearly 200 located in Le Porge. The village, home to around 3,500 people, suffered the most severe impact within the department. Thousands of tourists were evacuated from popular summer destinations, prompting the Union of Hospitality Trades (Umih) in Gironde and the Landes to launch a campaign titled “Do Not Abandon Us!” aimed at encouraging visitors to return once the area is deemed safe. They argued that media coverage of the fires did not fully reflect the readiness of these destinations to welcome guests again. In addition to local efforts, a charity concert titled “SOS Solidarity Wildfires” was planned for Thursday, August 27, at the Arkéa Arena in Bordeaux. The event, broadcast live on M6, featured prominent French musicians including Pascal Obispo, who resides in the nearby Cap Ferret. The concert aimed to raise funds for those affected by the fires. Tickets sold out quickly, reflecting widespread public interest and concern. Obispo recently addressed controversy surrounding his decision to allow gendarmes to stay at his home in Cap Ferret to facilitate their operations during the crisis. Some online critics accused him of receiving preferential treatment, while others suggested that areas like Le Porge were sacrificed for the benefit of wealthier regions. In response, Obispo posted a message on Instagram stating that he believed it was his duty as a citizen to assist emergency services. He emphasized that the Cap Ferret location was strategically important due to its low geographical position, making it a critical hub for rescue efforts. He concluded by urging critics to redirect their energy toward helping those affected rather than engaging in divisive debates.
