Brooklyn was born with Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a genetic disorder that requires a liver transplant. At 19 months old, she was placed on a transplant list and faced a grim prognosis, doctors estimated she had only three days to live without a transplant. It turned out that Brooklyn’s mother, Ashley Baker, was also seeking information about the recipient of Michael’s liver. The two mothers began exchanging letters and eventually met, forming a bond based on shared grief and hope. The families remained connected, with Brooklyn and her mother visiting Ohio regularly. Brooklyn and Noah Waters, Michael’s younger brother, quickly formed a friendship. Noah was 6 when he first met Brooklyn, and the two spent time together during visits. Brooklyn described Noah as someone who brought laughter and warmth, especially during her hospital stays. When Brooklyn required another surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in high school, Noah visited daily, staying by her bedside and offering comfort.
