Zoox stated that a new software update aims to improve the detection and response to heavy smoke. The letter noted that NHTSA has documented numerous cases where self-driving vehicles have driven into active emergency scenes, sometimes blocking the paths of ambulances and firefighters or failing to recognize basic safety signals such as flashing lights, flares, smoke, and traffic cones.
