Every shallow water coral reef ecosystem in Australia faces an extremely high probability of collapse by 2075, primarily due to projected ocean warming, according to a new global assessment. The evaluation, conducted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in partnership with the University of Melbourne and more than 250 researchers worldwide, determined that 96 percent of the world’s assessed coral reef ecosystems are currently classified as critically endangered. This designation represents the highest level of threat on the IUCN Red List of Ecosystems. The findings were released on the sidelines of a United Nations biodiversity conference held in Albania. The study examined coral reef ecosystems across 127 tropical and subtropical marine ecoregions. These areas span approximately 72,726 square miles, or 188,362 square kilometers, of global reef territory. Notable systems included in the analysis comprise Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, the Coral Triangle region in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific, the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and the Red Sea. All 17 distinct Australian coral reef ecosystems received the critically endangered classification. Researchers identified climate driven ocean warming as the most widespread and severe threat facing reefs globally. Increasing frequency of marine heat waves is causing mass bleaching events and widespread coral death, subjecting these environments to unprecedented pressure. Mishal Gudka, a research fellow at the University of Melbourne and the scientific lead for the assessment, stated that while the risk of collapse is escalating, the findings should serve as a warning rather than a reason for hopelessness. He noted that coral reefs have demonstrated a notable capacity to recover from severe bleaching incidents. Gudka argued that pockets of resilient reefs could persist in the future if immediate actions are taken to support their survival. He emphasized that much of the calculated risk stems from projected changes that have not yet fully occurred, identifying the present moment as a critical period to expand conservation and climate initiatives to prevent catastrophic loss. Ben Fitzpatrick, director of Oceanwise Australia and an adjunct research fellow at the University of Western Australia’s Oceans Institute, led the specific assessment regarding Australian reefs. He observed that while local management strategies can yield positive results, these benefits are increasingly being negated by shifting climate conditions. Fitzpatrick warned that under current climate trajectories, the impacts will intensify, rendering the risk of total collapse exceptionally high for all Australian reefs. He suggested that combining intensified local management with rapid decarbonization offers a path to avoiding this outcome, though he cautioned that the timeframe for effective intervention is shrinking quickly. Although coral reefs occupy less than one percent of the ocean floor, they support roughly one quarter of all marine species. These ecosystems provide essential habitats, food sources, and breeding grounds for thousands of species. They also underpin fisheries, tourism industries, and coastal protection services for millions of people worldwide. When a reef system collapses, the structure undergoes a fundamental alteration. Reef building hard corals largely vanish, replaced by algae, rubble, and other organisms such as sponges. This shift eliminates the complex biological diversity that previously supported everything from microscopic invertebrates to large reef fish like grouper. Grethel Aguilar, the Director General of the IUCN, described coral reefs as one of the clearest indicators of overall ocean health. She stated that their decline poses direct threats to biodiversity, coastal communities, and economic sectors reliant on healthy marine environments. Aguilar asserted that it is not too late to allow reefs a chance for recovery, provided there is decisive action to tackle climate change and stop further ocean warming. She highlighted the necessity for ambitious emissions reductions, enhanced protection measures, restoration efforts, and sustained investment in resilient coastal ecosystems and the dependent communities. The global assessment was coordinated by the IUCN, the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management, the University of Melbourne, and CORDIO East Africa. Experts from more than 80 countries and territories contributed to the work. The research relies on decades of ecological monitoring data. Recent studies corroborate the urgency of the situation. A separate IUCN study published in the journal Nature last month found that nearly 44 percent of reef building coral species face an elevated risk of extinction due to climate change. Additionally, a survey from a year prior indicated that harmful bleaching had affected 84 percent of the world’s reefs, marking the most intense event in recorded history. The year 2024 was documented as the hottest year on record, with a substantial portion of that heat absorbed by the oceans. The average annual sea surface temperature in non polar regions reached a record 20.87 degrees Celsius, equivalent to 69.57 degrees Fahrenheit. Beyond addressing global emissions, experts recommend reducing pollution, curbing overfishing, and limiting coastal development to aid reef survival.
