A Turkish opposition leader who was removed from his position as head of the largest opposition party has announced the creation of a new political party. Özgür Özel, formerly the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), declared today that he will establish a new party following his removal. The announcement comes two months after the court invalidated the 2023 CHP congress where Özel was elected as party chairman, citing alleged irregularities. Specialists say that Özel’s decision stems from the higher court’s failure to address his appeal against his removal. The court had initially ruled the congress invalid and placed Özel under interim leadership by appointing his controversial predecessor, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. Kılıçdaroğlu is viewed by some as a weak politician and a favored opponent of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The situation has left the opposition in disarray, with many members uncertain about their future course of action. The formation of a new party could significantly shift the political landscape. It is currently unclear how many of the 135 CHP lawmakers will transfer their mandates to the new entity. Observers estimate that around 80 members might join, which would make the new party the largest opposition force in Turkey. This potential realignment could challenge the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has been in power since 2002. The legal proceedings surrounding Özel’s removal have sparked considerable debate. The initial ruling by the court in Ankara questioned the legitimacy of the 2023 congress, leading to the removal of Özel and the temporary installation of Kılıçdaroğlu. The higher court, however, did not take up the case, leaving the issue unresolved. This lack of judicial resolution has fueled speculation about the broader implications for democratic processes within the country. Political analysts suggest that the move by Özel reflects growing frustration among opposition figures with the current system. Many feel that the judiciary is being used as a tool to suppress dissent, particularly against prominent critics of the government. The establishment of a new party could serve as both a strategic and symbolic act, aiming to unite fragmented opposition forces and present a unified front against the ruling party. As the political climate continues to evolve, the impact of this new party remains to be seen. The transition of support from the CHP to a new entity could lead to internal divisions or, conversely, strengthen the opposition’s bargaining power. The coming weeks will likely see further developments as the new party seeks to consolidate its base and define its platform. For now, the focus remains on the immediate steps taken by Özel and his allies to formalize their presence in the political arena.
